Independent election auditing exists because people like you decide it should.

Every dollar you give to America Counts goes directly to building the infrastructure for independent election auditing in the United States. We’re a small nonprofit with no corporate sponsors and no government funding. Our work exists because people like you decide it should.

What your donation funds

The Actual Vote data pipeline. Recording poll tapes is just the beginning. Your donation funds the software, hosting, and development work that turns thousands of raw video recordings into structured, verified, published comparisons against official results — the analytical work that makes independent election auditing credible and useful.

App development. The Actual Vote app is free for everyone. Keeping it free, keeping it working, and making it better costs money — development, testing, app store fees, and the ongoing maintenance that any production software requires.

Reports and analysis. Every Actual Vote report we publish — including the investigation of discrepancies, correspondence with election officials, and public archiving of findings — takes skilled labor and infrastructure. Your donation puts more elections under independent scrutiny.

Expansion to new states. We’ve operated in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Every new state requires research into local election law, poll tape access methods, precinct coding systems, and relationships with county election offices. Your donation helps us reach more of the country.

Volunteer training and support. We train volunteers, produce educational materials, maintain a comprehensive technical manual, and provide direct support to people using Actual Vote in the field. None of this happens without funding.

Wanna Vote development. Our newest initiative, Wanna Vote, is a system for documenting voter suppression — the barriers that prevent eligible voters from casting a ballot. Wanna Vote collects encrypted, legally admissible evidence directly from affected voters and puts it in the hands of lawyers who can act on it. We’ve already proven we can build trustworthy election technology with Actual Vote. Now we’re applying that same engineering rigor, commitment to privacy, and track record of transparent results to a problem that has never had a systematic solution: making voter suppression visible, documented, and actionable. Your donation funds the software development, independent security auditing, legal review, and canvasser training program that will bring Wanna Vote from design to its first real-world deployment.

What your dollars have already done

Across 6 published Actual Vote reports, Actual Vote volunteers have independently audited 1,037,636 individual votes — 7,034 poll-tape-to-official comparisons across 13 county-level election Analyses in 3 states. Every initial non-match that has ever come up was either an AC process error or was explained by a mechanism the county itself identified; zero true discrepancies have ever existed. Every one of those Analyses was funded by donations like yours.

When we confirm accurate vote reporting, that’s independent evidence strengthening public confidence. When we find problems, that’s accountability that wouldn’t exist without us. Either way, the public wins — and your donation made it happen.

Tax deductibility

America Counts is a project of Democracy Counts, Inc., a non-partisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation (EIN 81-2822233). Your donation is tax-deductible to the full extent permitted by law. You will receive a receipt for your records.

Other ways to support our work

Not in a position to donate financially? You can still make a major contribution. Volunteer your professional skills, record poll tapes in the next election, or simply share our work with someone who might care. Every form of support moves us closer to a country where independent election auditing is routine practice, not a novel idea.
